POSES - from the memoir of Monique Jenkinson
Fauxnique is the drag queen alter-ego of artist/choreographer/performer/writer Monique Jenkinson. Lauded for her ‘campy, intellectual juxtaposition of pop culture and high art,’ she sees the performance of femininity as a powerful, vulnerable and subversive act. Since making herstory as the first cis-woman to win a major drag (queen) pageant, she has performed her works in wide-ranging venues and contexts nationally and internationally, including Joe’s Pub, New Museum, Judson Church and the Stonewall in New York; Afterglow Festival and Harvard’s A.R.T./Oberon; Stud Bar, City Hall, and de Young Museum in San Francisco; and in New Orleans, Seattle, London, Reykjavik, Berlin, Rome, Catania, Cork and Zürich. She created space for kids to dress drag queens at a major museum, played the DIRT (originated by Justin Vivian Bond) in Taylor Mac’s Lily’s Revenge and Eurydike/Ismene in Anne Carson’s ANTIGONICK, and engaged in public talks with gender theory luminary Judith Butler and RuPaul bestie Michelle Visage in the space of a week. She is writing a memoir about drag, from which this piece is an excerpt.
The Tales of Juanita MORE!
From her glamorous Tenderloin pied-à-terre, San Francisco's most legendary impresario takes listeners on a provocative, sometimes scandalous, journey into the heart of the city's dazzling counter-culture. Tales of Juanita MORE! follows the legendary performer, "mother" to the wayward, and Bay Area drag hag as she parades through her day-to-day life, recounting it's storied —and sometimes seedy — history, and delves into a world that many think they know, but few have set foot in. Expect cameo appearances, salacious anecdotes, and the promise of jaws-dropping.
