Juanita MORE! Pride Beneficiary Statement, 2026 GLBT Historical Society

This year marks the 22nd year of the annual Juanita MORE! Pride Party. What started as an alternative event to celebrate the diversity of our community has grown into what has been touted as simply the "best party of the year." This event is one of the most significant non-profit events held during Pride weekend. I take great pride in seeking out some of our community's most impactful LGBTQIA+ organizations to serve as beneficiaries for events I organize. With the community’s help, we have raised over $1.5 million over the past three decades. I cannot thank everyone enough for all your contributions over those years.

This year, for my annual Pride party, I have chosen the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Historical Society as the event's beneficiary. Founded in 1985, they are internationally recognized as a leader in LGBTQIA+ public history, and are often referred to as the “queer Smithsonian.” They collect, preserve, exhibit, and make public materials and knowledge to support and promote understanding of our culture and diversity, helping everyone to accept who we are and our ongoing efforts for equality and justice. Last year, it was announced that they would be moving into a new home in the heart of the Castro.

At this moment in time, the history and rights of the LGBTQIA+ community are under great threat, especially in light of ongoing challenges and backlash from the current administration. Lawmakers have been proposing legislation to protect our symbols and rights. Recent legislative efforts aim to classify Gilbert Baker’s Pride flag as an authorized symbol, ensuring its presence at significant sites like Stonewall and affirming LGBTQIA+ history against political changes. These actions have been described as part of a broader anti-LGBTQIA movement. Will not be erased.

The work of institutions like the GLBT Historical Society - not just to preserve our history, but to use that history as a lens through which to understand the challenges of the present - is as important as ever. Creating these spaces and maintaining the archives are critical tools for inspiring future generations to advocate for social justice.

Loads of Love, Juanita
