I’ve joined together with a group of fellow nightclub organizers, producers, entertainers, venue owners, and non-profit community leaders to provide direct gifts of aid to workers from the LGBTQ nightlife groups in the Bay Area.
The San Francisco Bay Area Queer Nightlife Fund has received an incredible amount of community support so far. But we have also received a significant number of requests for help from workers whose full time or part-time jobs have been affected by the current crisis.
It’s super hard to wrap my head around the number of losses that are starting to quickly pile up because of the coronavirus. When I consider the restaurant world---where I have spent most of life, it’s just devastating. A friend who is the General Manager of a restaurant group just let go of 300 people---dishwashers, bussers, food runners, prep cooks, link cooks, the chef, service staff, the host and hostess. How does the owner hang on to that restaurant while it is shuttered?
The same thing is applying to nightclubs, bars, theaters, event organizers, entertainers, and venue owners. It’s just beyond upsetting.
We need to support each other in a lot of ways right now. Many of my friends literally live day-to-day. So help them out by making a donation. It will make a huge difference in their lives. And, it feels like they are going to need it again. Please remember to check in with everyone to make sure that they are staying mentally healthy and safe.
